Hi Guys,

When you open a web forum like this, part of the default feature-set package is a feature which either deletes or bars 'bad language', or substitutes certain letters in certain words for asterisks - e.g. sh*t etc.

On the Web, this is called 'The Scunthorpe Conundrum', as you can see from this example from my site, and how it is addressed by site owners largely dictates the way a board is run, and ultimately the mood of the house.

Now what I'm trying to do here at Scotschat is judge that house mood, in terms of with what you feel more comfortable - language governors on or off? If they come off, then there will no barrier to the language used here; if they remain on, then you get words substituted for perfectly good earthy Anglo Saxon phrases and Scots vernacular (a pity, when fluid Jockanese is one of the more colourful and spicy languages in the canon).

I'll emphasise that I'm not advocating a charter for coarse language; just an easing up and a little more adult approach to things - personally I think there's very little more annoying than reading screeds of posts littered with **** or 'Poop' when it's perfectly obvious what the poster meant to say but is prevented from doing so.

Now, that's just my opinion - it might not be yours - hence the vote here.

Please vote away.

You may want to read the terms of use.

The terms of use are what we decide them to be.

For example, I'm changing my board's terms so that it is 18+ only, not the default 13 years, as this package gets shipped.

That's the point love: it is not the intention to take the site to the sewer, and as you can see from my site, if you give members the choice/freedom, they tend not to use it all or only for emphasis, but never maliciously.

It's called being grown up about it as opposed to being proscriptive. :D

So, by a ratio of three to one, the over all mood is to remove them.

OK.
