Bikers get all revved up over new testBikers get all revved up over new test
protesters descend on Dundee to make point
| Quote: | BIKERS from all over the north-east descended on Dundee yesterday to join a national protest against a new, EU-approved motorcycle test.
More than 200 bikers drove across the Tay Bridge to show their resentment over the test, which was introduced in April.
Similar protests were held in Leeds and Cardiff. The new test is split into an on-road and an off-road part.
Riders must go to a different centre to carry out manoeuvres and emergency stops. Moray bikers must drive to a new centre at Longman Road in Inverness.
The Driving Standards Agency said the test will improve the standard of road safety for riders.
Bikers argue there are not enough test centres to make the system work and warn younger learners may be discouraged from becoming properly qualified.
Anthony Wing, Aberdeen-shire representative for the Motorcycle Action Group, which organised the protest, said: “If the test puts better trained people on the roads it can only be a good thing, but if people can’t do their tests because there aren’t enough centres that means there’s no incentive to get more training. And this can only make things worse, not better.”
The Driving Standards Agency declined the invitation to attend the protest and listen to the riders’ views. |
