You will need to go have a look, it is nice down there.
If you do go, make sure you have your accommodation or camp site sorted before you go, even more important in the tourist season.

I like the Lake District as well - almost as good as the Highlands and only half the time to get there. We're going to Eskdale later this year.
The only places to avoid, unless you like crowds and traffic jams, are Bowness and Windermere..
